Witness for the Prosecution

Witness for the Prosecution

Wilder comes to England for an adaptation of Agatha Christie’s courtroom story, adding his trademark wit to an excellent murder mystery hybrid. Charles Laughton is the charmingly grumpy barrister going against the advice of his doctor to take what looks a hopeless defence case. His wonderful dryness reveals Wilder’s humour to be not at all dissimilar from the traditional English drollery you see in the likes of Yes Minister, while Marlene Dietrich essentially reprises her femme fatale role from A Foreign Affair, but brilliantly. The whole thing is executed outstandingly.
