Welcome to the Punch
Dodgy London accents and plot clichés aside, Welcome to the Punch is a mighty impressive feat. Competing as a blockbuster (and succeeding) with a budget of just $8m, it’s an exciting and intelligently directed actioner which proves once again the value of limitations. The reviews I’ve read ascribed a lack of character development (snore!) to the pace of the film, but really a lot of what’s going on in the movie is a mash-up of tropes. I don’t want to spoil, but the relationship between the characters of James McAvoy and the excellent-as-ever Mark Strong is beautifully ambiguous. Above all, I was struck by the brilliance of the locations.
