Iron Man 3
While I’m wary of sequels proving popular for falling back on laughs – see last year’s Avengers and Skyfall – this is a damn entertaining film, better than the previous Iron, uh, Men by a mile and my pick for best Marvel Studios movie to date. Reuniting with the writer-director whose seminal Kiss Kiss Bang Bang gave him his comeback, Downey Jr delivers another plethora of gold one-liners, while the film’s pace is such that you know you’ll need to revisit the film to more fully appreciate them. With the 2005-06 Extremis run proving much more interesting story inspiration than the Iron Ripoff threat of the prior films, a dash of psychological intrigue distinguishing the piece from standard heroism fare (- a few scenes are clearly Watchmen-inspired), and some ingenious plotting that counters the weaknesses of some other Marvel movies, this is a fresh shot in the arm for the superhero genre 13 years into its cinematic renewal.
What I don’t understand is why I never care about Tony Stark/Iron Man. Plus, for me, the threats to Iron Man (or the rest of the world) never seemed convincing enough for me to be excited
An asshole, rich industrialist? I think not liking him is understandable! It’s the RDJ charisma that people like, I think. RE: Threats, look, i’ll pay up, just give me another week
What I mean to say is, yeah, Obadiah Stone was boring and I don’t remember the what’s or why’s of IM2 apart from a repeat of Stark’s tech being used against him. This one, I can understand a lack of excitement at the end cos the stakes are never raised anywhere near the level of the pyowww-kabooom-badoombadoom house attack, the threat is pretty vague, and dude calls in a surprise too often to have any doubts, dontchathink
True, I suppose it just comes down to your feelings on RDJ. I find him amusing in parts, I guess
