Irma la Douce
Featuring the proven chemistry of Jack Lemmon and Shirley MacLaine, this is a different creature to The Apartment. For starters it’s a lot sillier – too silly sometimes – as the innocent idealist played by Lemmon falls for MacLaine’s prostitute, and conspires for her retirement no matter the number of costume changes. By the end of the second act, it inadvertently lets in a rather dark undercurrent to the persona, as Nestor battles his alter ego Lord X. Yes, it’s slightly clunky but nonetheless amusing from end to end.
