And so we come to the great auteur’s last production, a painful farewell in more ways than one. The abysmal score isn’t nearly as distressing as witnessing the desperate-for-work Wilder and Diamond not playing to their strengths at all. A remake of the French farce L’Emmerdeur, the movie becomes increasingly haphazard in its quest for laughs, and renders that great comic pairing – Lemmon and Matthau – utterly unlikable. Oh, 80s.
