Tyrannosaur

Paddy Considine’s much amiable directorial debut sticks within the Shane Meadowsy social realism mold, but it’s a story with the execution of a detective yarn, complete with red herrings, bluffs, buried clues and revelations. Peter Mullan is believable as lead Joseph, a grieving man with… anger management issues. His performance is absent, perhaps, of identifiably meaningful nuance, but anything which is lacking is more than compensated by Olivia Colman’s incredible turn as the charity shop worker who tries to help Joseph. For all the premise’s familiarity, it’s a story with something to say – questions which transcend any specific cultural context – though to hint at what would be to lessen the fun of your detective work.
