Apart from having the worst title song of the series, Skyfall is great entertainment. With a refreshingly composed pace, it is easily the best looking Bond film courtesy of Roger Deakins’ cinematography, beautifully integrated with the action choreography. The Shanghai chapter is particularly wonderful. Sam Mendes meanwhile brings to the table what you’d have thought Marc Forster was hired for last time round – delivery of an involving story which carries some thematic and psychoanalytic depth. Alas, while the movie is exciting in all the right places, it is never as thrilling as Casino Royale or outrageous as Quantum of Solace. The bar unraised, one suspects the set pieces are destined to fade with the saturation of time. For now, though, it’s a great blockbuster-drama which packs some delights.
