At times, Scorsese’s 3D effort was simply magical. But the structure wasn’t exactly perfect. Once the automaton revealed its clue (which I had long anticipated), there was a big lag before the plot regained momentum. There were also tensions between themes that weren’t resolved, and the 3D – while fitting to the formalist tradition exemplified by Melies – suffered practically when anything was out of focus.
Still, it was so, so much better than its trailers, and its conclusion (not the epilogue) was very touching.
